postponed from November 14th

9:00am - 11:00am
Pinckard Baptist Church

Our “pack wide” Space Derby will be held at Pinckard Baptist Church located at 3401 Pinckard Pike, Versailles.

Scouts will register their spacecrafts from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM, with an Opening Ceremony and racing to start at 9:30 AM.  The race events should be concluded no later than 11:00 AM on Saturday.

All rockets must pass the following inspection to qualify for the race:

  •     Only basic materials supplied in BSA kits may be used.
  •     Rocket body may be no longer than 7 inches, not including propeller and fins.
  •     There are no restrictions on weight or design of rocket.
  •     All scouts shall use no more than three rubber bands in their rocket.
  •     Scout shall use rocket built for this year, no previous year rockets will be allowed.
Space Derby Kits (stock# 17095) should be purchased from the Scout Shop and cost approximately $6.00. The kit consists of two blocks of balsa wood that should be shaped and painted as a space craft. The kit also includes required hardware for the kit to be assembled, and rubber bands for the propeller. The pack will provide all the necessary starting gates and “race track” required.  Please note that this is not a “snap and play” kit and will require some work from the Scout to complete. The objective for this type of activity is for you to work together with your Scout on the spacecraft.

Upon registration, your Scout’s space craft will be impounded. The event will be double-elimination. When your Scout's “on deck” time is called, he will come up and an adult leader will assist in twisting the rubber bands and will help rig the craft on the launch pad. An adult leader will start the race. An additional 2 adult leaders will serve as judges. An adult leader will not judge his own son’s race.

We look forward to having a fun and exciting race this Saturday, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Tanner.
